The water-based cryoforms are the same animals as the methane forms, which do not directly survive the change between the two habitats. These forms lay eggs to/from the much colder liquid methane temperatures by becoming lipid-based forms. Surface ices, hard as granite at these temperatures, form tall glaciers in the weak gravity. Far from the surface, the pressure and friction let ammonia and water life grow and prosper, fed my small flows and conservation of surface algae, volcanic and methane like gases, with nitrogen oxides being a scarce resource. Predation is based on echolocation, with grazers continually gnawing on cover ice, slightly colder then the rocky floors. The whole planet nearly covered with ices, hundreds of subsurface lakes are isolated from one another, left for animals to evolve unique forms for 10s of millions of years. The polar regions harbor the zones of the methane forms using long fatty acids to catalyze slow growing lifeforms, which provide alien sophonts with large amounts of energy. Sophonts on Birver ------------------ Birver was colonized by several corporations from Tirem, seeking profit from the bourgening popultion of that world. Several small bankrupcies, despite high profits opened the world to settlement by free market speculators, begining the custom of active business (and social) managment by the vast majority of the population. Once a minor industrial base with trade was established, everyone from loners to whole families bought 'windhoping' crafts. Birver, with its high windspeeds and low surface gravity, evolved several large native flying animals, which inspired the colonists to create grasshopper-like craft, the weak RTG plant forming liquid H2, and using storage tanks with ethane to store each burst of thrust, the pilot then gliding to mapped out prospecting fields, were foodstuffs of all kinds and qualities slowly grow from the land. Methane-based forms are fed to wells under human settlements, those waterforms then caught as foodstuffs for export to Tirem. The dirty little of the secret of this world is actually nothing secret: the third imperium, needing small amounts of plutonium for defence (and some trade with lower tech planets) are used on gigantic, dommed ship icebreakers. The heavy power plants are easier to maintain, provide ample heat, and the shear mass provide the mass the ships need to break surface ice for safe passage, the midsection of the ship serving as a heat dump for the reactor.
